As the threat of El Niño and prolonged dry spells continues to pose challenges to communities, the local government of Subic has strengthened its climate resilience efforts by implementing comprehensive measures focused on water security, agricultural assistance, public health, and disaster preparedness.

According to Mayor Jonathan “Jon” Khonghun, the municipality continues to carry out desilting operations in the rivers of Manggahan, Ilwas, and Sacatihan, along with the cleaning of creeks and drainage canals in various barangays to maintain proper water flow and prevent problems caused by extreme weather changes.

The municipal government has also intensified support for the agriculture sector through the distribution of seeds and the provision of technical assistance to farmers to help minimize the impact of drought on food production.

The LGU has likewise prepared 20 water tanker trucks to manage and distribute water supplies in case communities experience shortages.

At the same time, health programs, financial aid, food assistance, and rice assistance remain available for families that may be affected by the impacts of El Niño.

Subic’s capacity to respond to health emergencies is also expected to improve with the scheduled opening of the Subic General Hospital this year.

Meanwhile, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) continues to conduct daily monitoring, information campaigns, and disaster preparedness activities as part of its mandate to ensure the municipality’s readiness for potential disasters.

Mayor Khonghun emphasized that efforts to address the impacts of El Niño and other climate-related challenges have long been part of his administration’s priority programs aimed at safeguarding the welfare and well-being of every Subic resident
